Ceremonial Wedding Blanket (Handira)

Black Sheep White Sheep

A stunning 1960's detailed Moroccan ceremonial wedding blanket with metal sequins and bands of colourful Berber symbols. Both shoulder bands are still attached. Exquisitely fine and detailed embroidery.

The loose ends of the brightly coloured embroidery are left long to hang freely on the reverse of the blanket.  When worn with the reverse side outwards, this is deliberate in order to protect the wearer of the blanket from the cold mountain winter climate, by preventing any falling snow from settling on the blanket.

All wool and cotton, handmade.

Origin - Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco.

Circa 1960's

Size: 178 x 110 cm with 15 cm tassels both ends.
